If I don't have a car do you think I can still ask for a car as part of the home exchange, or is that tacky?

Home exchange is like any other real estate transaction; everything is open to negotiation. If you want something you have to be willing to give something to get it. Unless what you're offering in the basic exchange is perceived as of more value than what you're receiving, you're going to have to up the ante in some way.
